Phillip Markoff, the alleged “Craigslist Killer,” shares something with Steven Figueroa, Erick Westervelt and Mulumba Kazigo. They all have been accused of murder in the last few years.
Markoff, as we know Markoff stands accused of murdering masseuse Julissa Brisman and the robbery of another woman who both advertised their services on Craigslist.
In June 2005 Westervelt was convicted in court of using a hatchet to beat Timothy Gray so severely in the head at his Bethlehem NY home that Gray died a few days later. Prosecutors said that Westervelt had a motive: his ex-girlfriend had left him for Gray.
In March of 2007 Figueroa allegedly plunged a long, serrated knife into the back of Pasqual Esposito. The victim had just stepped away from his post as a porter at a NYC high-rise to get a salad for dinner Figueroa confronted him several doors down, police and coworkers said. Witnesses said Figueroa was angry to learn that Esposito recently had contacted his college girlfriend.
In August 2005, according to police, Kazigo broke into his father’s Westbury New York apartment and beat his sleeping father with a baseball bat before eventually slitting his throat.
What else does Markoff have in common with Westervelt, Figueroa and Kazigo? They all went to UAlbany, the State University of New York at Albany. And so did I, graduating in 1981. What’s become of my alma mater?
